LINER NOTES

= MR. HOBBS TAKES A VACATION =

<<  The Movie

THE MUSIC

1 Main Title
Following a burst of big band activity, Mancini presents his main theme for Roger Hobbs on guitar - a relaxed, uncomplicated idea whenever Hobbs gets a moment of comfort.

2 A Month Off
Hobbs plans his summer vacation and Mancini gives him a brief lift.

3 Cream Puff (instrumental)
We meet teen daughter Katey talking on the phone. Mancini foreshadows her pending summer with an instrumental version of the secondary theme. Though scoring logs indicate the cue was written for this scene; it was also tracked into later scenes of Katey playing records.

4 Up His Nose
Hobbs takes his vacation with family in tow. Eerie organ (parodying Bach) identifies the spooky beach cottage he's rented. As Hobbs enters and switches on the light, Mancini closes with a gentle "ding".

5 Early to Rise
Hobbs hits the beach early with this theme in tow, then tackles his first big obstacle - an intimidating water pump. A running gag has Hobbs confronting various random problems while narrating his thoughts. Mancini scores these recurring dream-like scenes with a shimmering array of harps, keyboards, vibraphone and bells. Listen carefully and you'll notice a subtle quote of Hobbs' tune on bells at the end.

6 Roger and Peggy
Husband and wife share a quiet moment while Mancini provides relaxed accompaniment underneath.

7 Boompa
More family members arrive with grandchildren in tow. "Boompa" is the handle given Hobbs by one of the kids. Naturally, Hobbs becomes designated luggage carrier. First heard here as Hobbs is seen carrying suitcases up flights of stairs, the cue is tracked into later scenes as part of another running gag.

8 Night Night
A gentle cue written for - then deleted from - a bedtime sequence between Hobbs and Peggy. Mancini avoids main thematic ideas and allows soft string harmonies to set the mood.

Mr. Hobbs Takes a VacationThe five following dance numbers undescore a teen dance being held at the local yacht club. Hobbs hopes to find a match for Katey. She's shy, she has new braces, and Hobbs has to shell out $5 a head to land her a partner. Mancini stradles a fence between two unique genres: big band (brass, sax, piano) and rock'n roll (guitar, drums), skillfully melding them into one.

9 B Cups and Braces
10 Yacht Club Hop
11 Side Winder
12 Hobbs' Bigtime Swingtime
13 Something for Lauri

14 Honest Joe
Hobbs bids goodnight to the last partner, Joe. He gets his $5 bill back with the handshake. Katey has her partner. Mancini gives this tender moment a brief twirl of happiness.

15 The Quiet Side
Hobbs and Peggy work to fix myriad family issues. Mancini keeps the mood simple and supportive with delicate guitar chords and a warm string quote of Hobbs' Theme.

16 Rudders and Sails
It's father and son time. Hobbs takes Danny out for a boat ride, ostensibly to view an eclipse together. As they leave the pier and comically negotiate busy water traffic Mancini adds big-band inflections (muted brass) and swirling figures to the theme. When the pair finally do get into open waters Mancini changes direction, drops the comedy and takes things seriously. For a brief, shiny moment he affords a magnificent swelling of chords and soaring French horns to light up the sunset. Hobbs and Danny view the eclipse to a variety of ascending woodwind chords.
Ominous chords let us know the pair are now actually surrounded by fog, completely lost.

17 All Clear
Trilling woodwinds and tremolo strings announce the shoreline. Hobbs and Danny head home, now fully bonded. Mancini brings warmth to this sentimental scene with an expressive quote of the theme.

18 Pizza Heaven and Cream Puff (Vocal)
Katey and Joe share sodas, smiles and a brief duet.

19 Red Cap
Late visitors arrive. Hobbs is once again burdened with luggage.

20 Barn Swallow
Hobbs goes birdwatching with Martin Turner (John McGiver) and learns more than he wanted about flying fowl. Into the mix Mancini adds a trademark sound - crisp accents from trombones utilizing cup mutes.

21 About Last Night
With a nod to miscommunication, Hobbs "flattens" Martin. Later that night he conjures up an apology. Mancini adds tentative figures to the proceedings.

22 Farewell to Vacation
The family heads home. All is well with one exception - Joe never said goodbye to Katey. The family rides to animated rhythms and a satisfying quote of Hobbs' theme. At midpoint Mancini suddenly brings in hip muted trumpet figures. Joe's car comes into view. For a moment the family shares a few words with him. With rich chords from French horns and low brass, both Katey and Mancini bid Joe a warm farewell.

23 Cast and End Title
Hobbs' theme brings the score full circle. Ending not with a whimper but a bang, Mancini ushers in a glorious coda with one of his unique - and totally signature - fortissimo cadences.
