Product Description:
To many movie buffs, the name Miklos
Rozsa (1907-1995) conjures up the sounds of trumpet
fanfares, glorious marches, and ancient Roman spectacles; to
others, the music of paranoia and schizophrenia, laced with
weird Theremin tonalities; to still others, the exotic sounds of
India or the jagged rhythms of urban violence.
They are all correct. Over 40 years, 100 scores, and 17 Oscar
nominations (including three wins), the Hungarian-born composer
wrote music for historical epics, psychological dramas,
fantasies based on children's classics, and dark film noir
classics - all while maintaining a separate career as a composer
of music for the concert hall.
In March of 1977, the composer graciously accepted a request by
young film student and longtime fan James "Pav" Pavelek for an
interview discussing his life and career. Armed with a Super8
sound film camera, Pav ventured to the composer's magnificent
home in the Hollywood Hills, and filmed a 90-minute interview
session with the composer sharing anecdotes of his illustrious
life and career.
For the first time, this archival interview footage has now been
professionally transferred to video and enhanced with photo
montages, clips, piano performances by Dan Robbins, and archival
footage of Rozsa conducting. While definitely not up to the
standards of modern digital camcorders, this 20-year project was
a labor of love and is now available in the best picture and
sound quality possible. The composer discusses some of his
classic film scores in detail, including KNIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR,
THE FOUR FEATHERS, THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD, THAT HAMILTON WOMAN,
THE JUNGLE BOOK, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, SPELLBOUND, THE RED HOUSE,
THE KILLERS, THE NAKED CITY, A DOUBLE LIFE, MADAME BOVARY, QUO
VADIS, PLYMOUTH ADVENTURE, THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE, BEN-HUR,
KING OF KINGS, SODOM AND GOMORRAH and THE PRIVATE LIFE OF
SHERLOCK HOLMES, all while displaying his wit, humor and Old
World charm.
Sadly, Pav passed away in May of 2003 after a long illness, and
it was his wish that these films would be preserved and made
available to anyone interested. Despite the technical
shortcomings inherent in the format originally used, this 99
minute DVD is a must to anyone interested in films, film music,
and this magnificent composer. The DVD comes in a plain plastic
case, but the label has a portrait of the composer by Pav
himself (who was a well-known artist and illustrator) and is
playable on all DVD players worldwide.
