This
is an extraordinary and touching radio show paying tribute to
the life of Henry Mancini with interviews to his family and
closest friends. Great work by Carl Davis on this BBC program.
From the BBC Radio 4 website:
Conductor and composer Carl Davis presents Radio 4's Archive Hour, gaining rare and unprecedented access to the private archive of one of America's most remarkable and best loved composers - Henry Mancini. Housed under lock and key at the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles the archive is home to an extraordinary collection of stories, letters and original music scores. The program's objective is to dig deep into this archive and find surprising and new material providing a revealing insight into the man behind such unforgettable favorites as Moon River, Days Of Wine and Roses and the Pink Panther theme.
You will hear a new and rare interview the film director Blake Edwards speaking of his love for Mancini and how his cat has come back as Henry. Mancini's wife, Ginny reveals secrets and personal stories about their life together and reads from a delightful and controversial letter that Audrey Hepburn wrote to Henry after viewing Breakfast At Tiffany's when the producer wanted to cut the song Moon River from the film. She interfered and saved the day however. Fellow conductor and composer Elmer Bernstein explains how Henry changed the rules for composers world wide by his ruthless business practice of making sure he got copyright fees for all the music he composed.
Hollywood composer and friend Patrick Williams views for the first time original Mancini scores and while playing from the piano describes how the musicology, just works. Henry's daughter Monica finds the most moving 'thank you' poem written by her sister to their parents and sings from the original manuscript of Henry's favorite song Two For The Road. In The Life Of Henry Mancini the educated and enquiring Radio 4 listener gets a privileged and unexpected insight into the work and life of Henry Mancini where the beautiful intricate music mix is evocative of Mancini's magical scores.
