Being just 30 years of age, Christian Gaubert is by far the youngest artist to conduct the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra at a Filmharmonic concert.
If one were to ask what the relationship is between some of the biggest star singers in French show business - Gilbert Becaud, Charles Aznavour, Mireille Mathieu - the answer would be that is their arranger, Christian Gaubert. Born in June 29th 1944 in Marseilles, he had no real predestination for music but went, at the age of 10, to the local Conservatoire to study, which explains the classical basis of many of his arrangements.
Christian Gaubert joined the orchestra of Paul Mauriat in Paris when he was 20 and this was the start of his professional experience. He worked with Mireille Mathieu as arranger and composed some songs for her too. Then for a Francis Lai to go on a new record she was preparing, an arrangement was needed. Christian Gaubert did it, and this was the start of one of the most
successful duos in the history of popular music in France and in the world.
Gaubert has become an essential part of the Lai music scene and now does all the arrangements of his film scores and conducts the orchestra at recordings. Their most famous success together is, of course, the soundtrack of 'Love Story'.
However, he continues his career as a composer in his own right and, as well as
Mireillle Mathieu, his songs have been recorded by Johnny Hallyday, Andy Williams and other star vocalists.
Christian Gaubert and his wife Daniele live in a villa at Charillon outside Paris with their two year old son and a cocker spaniel called Snoopy. He likes to wear the latest style in clothes, blue is his best colour, the pistou soup of Provence his favourite food and skiing and bowling his sports.
For the record, this talented young man relaxes by listening to Wagner, Nat King Cole, and the Yes group, by reading Celine and Scott Fitzgerald and by watching the films of Fellini.
And what does Christian Gaubert not like? Simply this, he cannot take people who are constantly in a hurry. |
